Yellow Moong Dal Recipe in Green Masala is yellow moong dal cooked in green masala (a coarse paste of green chillies, ginger, garlic, fresh coriander, etc…).

Cooking Time: Appr. 35 Minutes

Yellow Moong Dal Recipe


1 cup yellow mung dal (moong dal)
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 tablespoon oil
½ teaspoon red chilli powder (optional)
2 cups water or as needed
For the green masala:
2 green chillies
1 inch ginger
2 garlic cloves
50g fresh coriander with stems
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste

Yellow Moong Dal Recipe

Cooking Method:

1. Wash the mung dal (moong dal) and soak for at least 3-4 hours.

2. Chop the chillies. Peel the ginger and chop it. Chop the garlic and fresh coriander with stems.

3. Make a coarse green masala paste in blender from the green masala ingredient list or use pestle and mortar to make coarse green masala paste.

4. Heat the oil in a pan or pressure cooker. Add the mustard seeds. When the seeds crackle, add the coarse green masala paste. Stir well and cook for 2 mins on low to medium.

5. Add the soaked mung dal (moong dal). Mix well and cook for 10 mins. Keep stirring every so often.

6. Add the water and bring the yellow moong dal recipe to boil. Let the dal simmer until the dal is cooked (around 20 mins). If you are cooking the dal in the pressure cooker, let it whistles for 2-3 times.

7. Stir well before serving.

Serve yellow moong dal recipe hot or warm with paratha, chapatti or rice.
