Vegetarian Black Eyed Peas Biryani is one of the quickest and easiest biryani recipes using black eyed peas.

Cooking Time: Appr. 30 Minutes
Serves: 2-3 People

Vegetarian Black Eyed Peas Biryani


1 cup rice (any rice like basmati, long grain)
1 tinned black eyed beans
2 large onions
1 tinned chopped tomatoes
1 teaspoon red chilli powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon garam masala powder
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 small cinnamon stick
1-2 bay leaves
3-4 green cardamoms
1 teaspoon garlic paste
1 teaspoon ginger paste
2-3 tablespoon oil
Salt to taste
Water as needed

Vegetarian Black Eyed Peas Biryani

Cooking Method:

1. Wash the rice and soak for 30 mins.

2. Chop the onions.

3. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker or large pan. Add the cumin seeds. When the seeds crackle, add bay leaves, cinnamon and cardamoms.

4. When the whole spices start sizzling, add garlic and ginger paste. Stir it for 30 secs.

5. Add the chopped onions. Stir and cook till the onions are transparent.

6. Add the tinned chopped tomatoes, red chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder. Stir and cook until oil separated on sides.

7. Wash and rinse the black eyed beans.

8. Add the tinned black eyed beans, salt and garam masala powder. Stir until all masala blend with beans.

9. Add the rice and mix well gently. Add 1 cup water, bring it to boil and cook on medium heat 10 mins. Stir it gently few times. Cover with the lid and cook on low heat until rice is cooked. If you are using pressure cooker, you can close it. Pressure cook till 2 whistles. Let the Vegetarian Black Eyed Peas Biryani stand for 10 mins before serving.

Serve Vegetarian Black Eyed Peas Biryani hot with raita, salad as a side dish.
