The Val Dal or vaal dal is also called Vicia faba, Broad Bean, Fava Bean, Faba Bean, Field Bean, etc.. This val dal recipe is cooked in green spices. It has got spicy kick. It is ideal to eat with rice chapatti.

Cooking Time: Appr. 30 Minutes
Serves: 2 people

Val Dal RecipeIngredients:

1 Cup dried Val Dal
2 large onions
4 baby or small onions (optional)
2 green chillies
½ inch ginger
3 garlic cloves
2 tablespoon chopped coriander
½ chilli powder
½ turmeric powder
½ garam masala
Salt to taste
Water as needed

Cooking Method:

1. Wash val dal and soak it overnight.

2. Peel the ginger and cut in small pieces.

3. Chop green chilli and cloves.

4. Now make a paste of ginger, garlic, chilli and chopped coriander in a grinder. It doesn’t need to be fine paste.

5. Cut the large onions in slices and remove skin of baby onions.

6. Heat the oil in the pan and add mustard seeds. When it crackles, add green masala paste and stir, cook it for 2 mins.

7. Add onion slices and cook it for 3-4 mins.

8. Now add chilli powder, turmeric powder, garm masala and salt. Cook and stir it for 5 mins.

9. Wash val daal and add in the pan and mix it with the spice. Cover the lid and let it cook for 15 mins. Keep stirring in between to avoid stick to the bottom of the pan.

10. Now add some water and leave baby onion on the top. Cover the lid again and let it cook for 10 mins.

11. Check the val dal after 10 mins to make it is cooked (it will be soft when you press in fingers). If it is cooked, you can turn off the heat. If it is not, then let it cook until it is cooked.

Serve this daal with rice chapatti or rice.
