Chapatti (Roti) is main indian bread recipe. Chapatti is also called Roti and Phulka.

Cooking Time: App. 25 Minutes
Serves: 2-3 People


2 cups wheat flour
2 tablespoon oil
Water as needed

Cooking Method:

1. Boil some water in a kettle.

2. Take the flour in a large bowl. Make a hole in the middle of the flour and add the oil and mix it in with a spoon.

3. Now make another hole in the middle of the mixed flour. Add some boiled water and mix it with a spoon as it will be too warm to mix by hand.

4. Add some more water and keep mixing with the spoon. Do not add too much water as you need to maintain the consistency to form the mix.

5. After a few mins you can use your hand to mix it properly and make it into a smooth dough. All the flour should be turned into dough.

6. Now take a bit slightly smaller than a tennis ball. Press it in between your hands and dip both sides in the wheat flour.

7. Roll on the rolling pin. If you need more flour for rolling, dip the dough ball in the flour as without it, the dough might be too sticky.

8. Keep rolling until it gets 4 times bigger than original dough size.

9. Heat the heavy based frying pan.

10. Gently lift the chapatti and put in the heated pan. Turn it over in 15 secs and leave for 30 secs. Now again turn it over and press gently with kitchen towel. This way, the chapatti will rise like a balloon.

11. Now take the chapatti out from the pan and do the same with the rest of the dough. It normally takes around 1 min to cook one chapatti.

Serve chapatti hot with butter on the top or plain with any curry.


To roll a perfectly round chapatti takes a long time to master. It might be difficult for some people at first but once you get practicing the easier it will be.
