Spicy Toor Dal Khichdi

3-4 green chillies (add extra for extra hot)
1 inch ginger
3-4 garlic cloves
¼ cup chopped coriander
1 teaspoon turmeric powder

2 bay leaves
2 cardamoms
4-6 peppercorns
Salt to taste
Water as needed

Toor Dal Khichdi

Cooking Method:

1. Wash the rice and dal together and soak for an hour.

2. Peel the ginger and chop it. Chop the chillies and garlic.

3. Make coarse paste of chopped ginger, salt, garlic, coriander, chillies and turmeric powder.

4. Heat the butter/ghee/oil in a large pan or pressure cooker. Add the cumin seeds. When the seeds crackle, add the star anise, cloves, peppercorns, cardamoms and bay leaves. Stir for a minute.

5. Add the coarse paste of green spices. Cook and stir for few mins.

6. Add the soaked rice and dal and add the water around 2½ cups. Add more water, if you like runny khichdi. Pressure cook for 4 whistles, if you are using pressure cooker. If you are cooking in a pan, stirring will be required in between to avoid the khichdi sticking to the bottom of the pan. You may require adding some more water as well. It will probably take 25 mins to cook. Check the dal to make sure, it is cooked by pressing it between your fingers.

7. Finally turn off the heat, once the toor dal khichdi is cooked. Let the the khichdi set for at least 10 mins. Stir it before serving.

Serve spicy toor dal khichdi hot with pickle, kadhi or with any curry.
