Simple Chicken Biryani Recipe is same in taste like authentic chicken biryani recipe but it is made with less ingredients.

Cooking Time: Appr. 50 Minutes
Serves: 4 People

Simple Chicken Biryani Recipe

Ingredients:

1½ cup basmati rice
8 skinless chicken drumsticks
8 baby potatoes
2 medium onions
1 tinned chopped tomatoes
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
Whole spices like 1 star anise, 2 bay leaves, 2 small cinnamon sticks, 4-5 green cardamoms
1 teaspoon red chilli powder
2 teaspoon coriander powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon garam masala powder
1 teaspoon cumin powder
Salt to taste
2-3 tablespoon oil

For marinade the chicken:

1 tablespoon garlic paste
1 teaspoon ginger paste
½ cup plain yogurt
½ teaspoon red chilli powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste

For garnishing chicken biryani:

2 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander
A pinch of saffron soaked in 2-3 tablespoon warm milk

Simple Chicken Biryani

Cooking Method:

1. Mix all ingredients from the marinade list with yogurt well and marinade chicken drumsticks for 2 hours or at least 30 mins.

Rice For The Chicken Biryani:

2. Take the rice in one pan and wash it (pour water into the pan and take it out by keeping your hand on the edge of the pan). Boil 4 cups of water in the kettle and add into the rice pan. Keep the pan on the full heat and add the salt. Cook it for 10-12 mins on full heat. It will need stirring in between. Check rice taking one in your finger (be careful, it will be too warm) and pressing it. If it bit softer, it’s half-cooked.

How To Cook Simple Chicken Biryani:

4. Peel the potatoes and boil for 12-15 mins.

5. Slice the onions.

6. Add chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder to the tinned chopped tomatoes and mix them.

7. Heat the oil in a large pan (big enough for chicken biryani), add the cumin seeds. When seeds crackle, add all whole spices.

8. When whole spices start sizzling, add garlic and ginger paste. Stir for a minute.

9. Add the onion slices and cook until onions are lightly brown. Stir in between.

10. Now add the marinade chicken drumsticks (only chicken drumstick from the marinade, keep aside the yogurt marinade at this point) and cook for 12-15 mins. Stir in between.

11. Add chopped tomatoes and spice mix. Cook for 6-8 mins. Stir gently every so often.

12. Add the boiled baby potatoes and mix well but gently.

13. Add leftover yogurt mix from chicken marinade, salt, cumin powder and garam masala powder. Stir gently and let it simmer for 5 mins.

14. Now add half of the rice and mix well with chicken masala but gently. Spread it evenly with the spoon. Add the remaining rice on the top and spread evenly without mixing with the chicken masala.

15. Garnish with half of chopped coriander on the top and pour saffron mix in circle shape.

16. Cover the lid and cook for 8-10 mins. on low to medium heat. Do not open the lid and let it cook on steam. Let this simple chicken biryani stand for few mins. before serving.

17. Garnish the simple chicken biryani recipe remaining chopped coriander.

Serve simple chicken biryani recipe warm with raita or salad.

Variation Tips:

You can add normal chicken pieces to this simple chicken biryani recipe. In this case reduce the chicken cooking time.

You can add fresh chopped tomatoes to this simple chicken biryani recipe instead of tinned chopped tomatoes.
