Puy Lentil Tomato Soup is cooked with puy lentil and plenty of tomatoes.

Cooking Time: Appr. 40 Minutes
Serves: 4 People

Puy Lentil Tomato Soup


1 cup puy lentil
2 onions
3 large tomatoes
1 tinned chopped tomatoes
3-4 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon paprika powder
½ teaspoon garam masala powder (optional)
2 tablespoon oil
Salt to taste
Water as needed

Cooking Method:

1. Wash and soak the puy lentil for 5-6 hours under the water (about 2½ cups water). Boil the puy lentil until it is cooked and mushy. Keep aside. You can use pressure cooker to cook puy lentil, cook for 4-5 whistles.

2. Chop the onion and garlic finely.

3. Chop the tomatoes in big chunks.

4. Heat the oil in a pan and add chopped garlic. Stir the chopped garlic for a minute or until slightly brown.

5. Add the chopped onion. Stir and cook until they are light brown.

6. Add the tomato chunks. Cook and stir for 2-3 mins.

7. Add the tinned chopped tomatoes, paprika powder and salt. Stir and cook until oil separated on sides.

8. Add the garam masala powder and cook for 2 mins.

9. Add the boiled puy lentil and water (as much as you want in soup). Bring the  puy lentil soup to boil and simmer for 12-15 mins.

10. Finally turn the heat off.

Serve puy lentil tomato soup hot or warm with your choice of bread as a starter or a main course.

Variation Tips:

To make spicy puy lentil soup, add extra paprika powder to the puy lentil soup.

You can use all fresh tomatoes and omit tinned chopped tomato. To make puy lentil tomato soup with only fresh tomatoes, take 6 large tomatoes. Cut 3 tomatoes in big chunks and chop 3 tomatoes finely. Add first finely chopped tomatoes after frying onions. So, finely chopped tomatoes make nice colour gravy for the soup lentil tomato soup. Then add tomato chunks and follow above steps.
