It’s pretty simple. Ten contestants (who are not allowed to be professional bakers) with a love for baking compete against each other under the careful watch of some experts. In the Australian version’s case it’s Dan Lepard and Kerry Vincent as the judges and Shane Jacobson and Anna Gare as the hosts. Each contestant is put through a range of challenges in each episode, with one being voted off each week until a winner is crowned. Australians will be able to watch it in 2013 on the Nine Network – and the American network CBS have commissioned their first series too.

Contestants are asked to display their skills across all sorts of different types of baking. Of course there are cakes, breads, biscuits, puddings and scones but they will also need to be able to show proficiency in much more intricate work, from cake decorating to making the perfect crème patissiere. There are many more skills to baking than you’d imagine – you need perfect timing as well as a great instinct when choosing ingredients. The Great Australian Bake Off will separate the good from the genius and make one baker a star! Previous winners in the UK have gone off to France to further study the art of being a patissiere – the best place to learn.
