It’s always the struggle for health conscious parents – to persuade their children away from junk foods!

With their colorful packaging and strategic marketing efforts, food and beverage companies are clearly targeting the young. This is a big reason for fathers and mothers to be alarmed. Besides, most of these products are very unhealthy because they are high in fat and sugar.

As a parent, you need to take action to make sure that junk food consumption is totally eradicated (or at least greatly minimized) in your home. Here are some effective reminders to help you promote healthy eating habits among your kids:

Dealing with the Junk Food Problem Set a Good Example

As cliché as it may sound, you, as a parent, really need to “practice what you preach.” Children will likely follow your lead and so you have to demonstrate wholesome choices when it comes to food. Kids are always observant and so they will keep an eye on what you order when you eat at restaurants. For example, did you ask for a soda or a fruit juice? Convincing your children to avoid these junk foods will be significantly easier if you are not struggling with it yourself.

Educate Your Kids

One of the main reasons why children usually prefer junk food is that it tastes better to them – and they do not fully understand the difference.

It is your responsibility to teach them about the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that they can get when they go for healthy foods. Tell them that all of these things contribute towards developing stronger bodies and staying away from different diseases.

Encourage Physical Activity

Perhaps largely unknown to some parents, persuading kids to be physically active is a very effective way of helping them reduce junk food cravings. Engaging in swimming, playing basketball or soccer, hiking, and other physical activities will mean that they will spend lesser time on TV and the computer – which means they are exposed to fewer advertisements in the first place.

Offer Healthy Alternatives

Finally, you have to offer nutritious options. If they want to have some ice cream, why not serve yogurt with fruits instead? In the same way of thinking, granola bars are better than chocolate cookies while rice cakes and kale chips are great substitutes for potato chips.

Cooking healthy meals at home is definitely a must. As such, collecting nutritious recipes for kids (mostly based on their favorite vegetables or meat) should be a hobby. You can buy cook books or browse the web to get hold of excellent ideas.
