Chole Chana Biryani (Chick Peas Biryani) is very easy to make and not complicated at all. This chole biryani hasn’t got garlic and onions in it but check the variation tips to cook chole chana biryani with onion-garlic.

Serves: 4 People

Chole Chana Biryani

Ingredients:

Rice for the biryani:

1½ cup basmati rice
2 tablespoon lemon juice
Salt to taste
Water as needed

For chole chana biryani:

1 tinned chickpeas
1 tinned tomatoes
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1½ inch ginger
1 bay leaf
1 small cinnamon stick
4-5 cardamoms
1 teaspoon red chilli powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon garam masala powder
A few saffron strands
Salt to taste

Chana Biryani

Cooking Method:

1. Soak the basmati rice for half an hour. Boil the rice in three cups of salted boiling water with lemon juice until three-fourth done. Drain the excess water and run the cold water to avoid getting the rice cooked in steam. Set aside.
Peel the ginger and grate it.

2. Heat the oil in a large pan. Add cumin seeds. When seeds crackle, add cardamoms, cinnamon stick and bay leaf. Stir it for 10 secs.

3. Add grated ginger and stir for a minute.

4. Add tinned tomatoes, chilli powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder. Stir and cook until oil is separated on sides.

5. Add the tinned chick peas, garam masala powder and salt. Mix well and cook for 3-4 mins.

6. Now spread the chick pea curry evenly with spoon in the same pan. Add the rice batch by batch and spread evenly. It will only one layer. Sprinkle the saffron strand on the top. Seal the pan keeping lid with wheat dough by sticking on the edge or keep heavy weight on the lid, so there is no escape for steam. Cook the chole biryani on high heat, keep the pan on side not in middle for 2 mins. Change the pan to other side and cook for 2 mins. Cook for a minute on leaving pan on middle. Let the chole chana biryani stand for 10 mins.

Serve the chole chana biryani hot with salad or raita.

Variation Tips:

You can add 2 sliced onions before adding tinned tomatoes and saute for 4-5 mins. Then follow all above steps to make chole chana biryani.

You can add 1 teaspoon garlic paste with ginger. Then follow all above steps to make chole chana biryani.
