Chick Peas Potato Curry (Aloo Chana Masala) is cooked with chick peas, potatoes, tomatoes and ground spices. Chick Peas Potato Curry is also known as aloo chana masala, aloo channa masala and aloo channa.

Cooking Time: Appr. 30 Minutes (including boiling time)
Serves: 3-4 People

Chick Peas Potato Curry


1 cup chick peas
2 medium potatoes
2 tomatoes
1 inch ginger
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
¼ teaspoon asafoetida
3 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon red chilli powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
2 teaspoon coriander powder
½ teaspoon garam masala powder
2 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
Salt to taste
Water as needed

Aloo Channa Masala

Cooking Method:

1. Wash and soak all beans under the water (around 3 cups water) overnight.

2. Pressure cook the chick peas with enough water until they are cooked properly. You can cook in a pan until they are cooked and bit mushy. Keep aside.

3. Boil the potatoes. Peel them and cut in cubes.

4. Peel and grate the ginger.

5. Chop the tomatoes. Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, chopped coriander leaves (1 tablespoon), coriander powder and salt to the chopped tomatoes.

6. Heat the oil in a pan. Add the cumin seeds. When cumin seeds crackle, add asafoetida powder.

7. Add the grated ginger and stir for around 30 secs.

8. Add the chopped tomatoes mix with little water. Cook until oil separated on sides. Keep stirring.

9. Add the boiled chick peas and cook for 3-4 mins.

10. Add the boiled potatoes and cook for 2 mins.

11. Now add the water as much as you want in gravy. Bring it to boil and cook aloo channa masala for further 3-4 mins.

12. Finally turn the heat off and garnish aloo chana masala with chopped coriander.

Serve Chick Peas Potato Curry hot with chapatti, paratha, puri or rice.

Variation Tips:

You can add grated garlic or garlic paste with grated ginger.

You can also add chopped onions before adding tomato mix and sauté until onions are cooked.
