Cheddar Cheese Sauce Recipe is basic cheese sauce recipe made using cheddar cheese. Cheddar cheese sauce recipe goes well with pasta bake, potato bake, nachos, over boiled broccoli, boiled cauliflower or any casserole recipe.

Serves: 4-5 People (appr. 2½ cups)

Cheddar Cheese Sauce Recipe


4 tablespoon butter
4 tablespoon plain flour
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
2 cups cold milk
A pinch of nutmeg powder
A pinch of cayenne powder
Salt for seasoning

Cheddar Cheese Sauce

Cooking Method:

1. Heat the butter in a pan. When butter is melted, add plain flour. Stir continuously with hand whisk. Stir for 5 mins on low heat or until smell of raw flour goes off and smell of cooking pastry starts coming up. Don’t cook too long otherwise the colour of the sauce will be dark.

2. Add half cup of cold milk and keep stirring. It will be thick quickly, now add remaining 1½ cup milk and stir continuously. Adding the milk little by little will help you to avoid creating lumps in the cheddar cheese sauce.

3. Add the nutmeg powder and cayenne powder. Stir well and let it simmer for about 10 mins.

4. Add a handful grated cheddar cheese and stir continuously it is melted. Turn the heat off.

5. When the cheese melted properly, add another handful grated cheese. Stir continuously until it is melted.

6. Keep adding the grated cheese in batches and stirring until it is melted all grated cheese is added and melted properly in the cheddar cheese sauce recipe.

7. Now season the cheddar cheese sauce with salt.

Serve cheddar cheese sauce as a dip or use in recipes like pasta, casserole, etc…

Variation Tips:

You can season cheddar cheese sauce recipe with pepper powder as well.
