Chana Dal Recipe (Chana Dal Curry) is one of the demanded dal recipe. Chana dal also known as bengal gram, yellow split peas, gram dal, etc…

Serves: 4 People

Chana Dal RecipeIngredients:

1 cup chana dal (bengal gram)
2 medium sizes onions
2 big garlic cloves
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon red chilli powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon garam masala powder
2 large proper red tomatoes Or
2 tablespoon tomato puree
2-3 tablespoon oil
Salt to taste
Water as needed
Some chopped fresh coriander leaves

Chana Dal

Cooking Method:

1. Soak the chana dal for at least 6 hours in 3-4 cups water.

2. Run the water to soaked chana dal until water comes clear or wash chana dal few times. Keep the soaked chana dal in colender/sieve to get rid off water.

3. Crush the garlic and slice the onions.

4. Chop the tomatoes finely, if you are using tomatoes.

5. Heat the oil in a heavy bottom pan or non-stick pan. Add the mustard seeds. When mustard seeds crackle, add sliced onions.

6. Stir fry until it become transparent then add crushed garlic. Stir it for few mins.

7. Add the soaked chana dal and stir well. Cover it and let it cook for 10 mins. Keep stirring often to avoid chana dal to the bottom of pan. Let the steam water go in the pan when you open it for stirring.

8. Add all the spices (apart of garam masala powder), salt and finely chopped tomatoes/tomato puree. Stir well and cook for 5 mins. Keep stirring often to avoid chana dal to the bottom of pan.

9. Add some water (as much as you want in chana dal recipe) and bring it to boil. Simmer for 15-20 mins or until chana dal cooked.

10. Add the garam masala powder and mix well. Simmer for further 2 mins.

11. Turn the heat off and garnish the chana dal recipe with chopped fresh coriander leaves.

Serve the chana dal curry with rice or chapatti.

You can boil the chana dal before adding to the chana dal recipe. Skip the step 7 and add the chana dal after step 8.
